Appreciative inquiry
1 Working on positives
2 There is science behind good behaviour, strengths and positive emotions
3 human beings are not always driven by our past - we are drawn by our future ...some live life as if it is today plus 5 % but it actually - Today is Tomorrow drawn back ie I want to be fit tomorrow so what do I do today - I exercise for 30 mins - this is positive psychology
Happiness hypothesis Appreciative inquiry Positive affect
Humans are a velcro for pain and teflon for happiness
State anxiety becomes a trait anxiety … don’t be angry with people or you might be sending them off as an anxious person forever
We as a species, constantly worry about what bad could happen if I do this?
Negative emotion - action repertoire
Anger - urge to attack
Fear - urge to escape
Disgust
10 forms of positivity
joy innovative, light, bright, playful

Magic ratio for a marriage relationship 5:1 for stable marriage

- 4 killers : criticism, contempt defensiveness and stonewalling
positivity self - test
Positivity ratio - needs to over 3:1 on a daily basis
Remember - physical and psychological pain is the same effect on the body
Appreciative inquiry - you can ask
* “What were the things that were failing?”
you should ask
* “What are the things that were succeeding?’”
eg children who are bad at maths will never get sooo much better as maths that they will be maths professor etc
Principles of App Inquiry
1 Constructionist words create worlds
2 Simultaneity inquiry in itself creates change
3 Poetic topics we study are fateful
4 Anticipatory image inspires action … long fuse big bang eg training to be
an engineer - you will only know in 10 years time if that was
a good move
5 Positive positive questions lead to positive change
6 Wholeness wholeness brings out the best
7 Enactment Acting “as if it is” is self fulfilling
8 Free choice free choice liberates power
Fundamental principle of App Inquiry : the future is a human control
As a leader your job is to make your team members weaknesses irrelevant and focus on their strengths
Positive image - Positive action … using laughter
Pygmalion effect - Eliza Doolittle
your self image is often dependent on someone else's image of you
In class
- Never connect failure to the future Never say - “This test is really hard and i don’t expect you to do really way!
- Never gossip about kids in the staffroom
- Always build high future expectations
Learned Helpfulness
eg leaving a coin in a phone box and then that person comes out feeling more helpful towards other
Inner Dialogue - must be at least 3 positives to 1 negative
Positive visualisation
Chronically happy people live longer than their depressed counterparts!
App Inquiry premises
- Organisations grow in the direction of what they repeatedly ask questions about and focus their attention on
- the Heliotropic principle - bending towards the light
Experiential learning
We shall not cease from exploration … Mark Twain
“Quit” versus “Mastery” Response
Fixed mindset vs growth mindset
Fixed: what you’re born with is what you stay with “Oh - I can’t do science etc”
Parents be careful you don’t give kids that fixed mindset eg”I came first in class” - that’s because you’re born intelligence
Not “you’re so beautiful” but “I like the way you dressed this morning!”
Fixed Mindset: Fixed self identity : “I can’t do math”
As a result they plateau early
Growth Mindset: Learning-Self Identity - I can totally do maths …. just need to persevere
Balancing Fixed and Learning Beliefs - building a learning self-identity
1 We should trust our own experiences because we can learn a lot from ourselves - trust the power of learning from experience
2 Redefine your relationship to failure
- control emotional responses to learn
- risk losing - “Investment in loss”
3 Reassess your beliefs about how you learn and what you are good at
monitor the messages you send yourself … self talk
The Experiential Learning Cycle ..goes around and around
Concrete experience reflective Observation Abstract Conceptualisation Active experimentation
